From Service to Success: Career Fair Welcomes Veterans for a day of opportunity and connection

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — America Works, a national workforce development organization with more than 40 years of experience, today announced a New York veteran hiring initiative to help veterans secure lasting civilian employment, including those facing homelessness or housing instability.

As part of the initiative, America Works New York, in partnership with the New York City Human Resources Administration, will host “From Service to Success,” a career fair and Veterans Day tribute, on Monday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Veterans bring valuable experience, leadership, and a strong commitment to their work, but connecting that experience to civilian career opportunities is not always linear,” said Dr. Lee Bowes, CEO of America Works. “Our goal is to help employers recognize that talent and help veterans find jobs where they can contribute, grow, and build lasting stability.”

The initiative builds on America Works’ broader work with veterans, including federally funded veteran employment programs in Chicago, San Francisco, and Memphis, Tennessee. In New York, the organization serves veterans across its workforce programs and employs veterans who help fellow veterans navigate the transition to civilian employment. America Works also encourages veterans to pursue opportunities within its own organization.

Locally, America Works is working to strengthen connections with New York City’s veterans’ agency and short-term housing facilities, to connect veterans with employment services. Its approach combines job placement, employer partnerships, and individualized assistance to address barriers to finding and keeping a job.

The effort comes amid a continuing need for support for veterans facing housing instability. New York City’s Department of Homeless Services reported 197 veterans in short-term housing on November 1, 2026.

For veterans facing these challenges, America Works emphasizes that employment services should complement, not replace, housing assistance and other support. The organization works to connect job seekers with opportunities that match their skills and support long-term financial stability.

Through the career fair and its ongoing employer partnerships, America Works is encouraging businesses to look beyond military job titles and recognize how veterans’ skills translate into civilian roles. The initiative will also emphasize hiring, onboarding, and retention practices that support veterans throughout their careers.
