Industrial facilities generate and consume significant amounts of energy through heating, cooling, compressed air, ventilation, production equipment and other processes. Depending on the application, some of that energy may be recoverable and redirected to reduce the demand elsewhere in the facility.

Heat carried out through an exhaust stack is one potential source of recoverable energy, but it is far from the only one.

Depending on the facility and its processes, energy-recovery opportunities may exist in heated exhaust air, process air, equipment and machinery heat, hot process streams, compressed-air systems, ventilation and makeup-air systems, or other sources of thermal energy that are currently being released or underutilized.

Air Dynamics evaluates how these energy sources interact with other demands within the facility to determine whether energy can be captured, transferred and productively reused.

  • Supplementing process-heating requirements

The objective is not simply to recover heat because it is available. The objective is to identify a useful match between where energy is being lost and where energy is needed.

An Engineered, Facility-Specific Approach

Energy recovery is highly application-specific. Air Dynamics evaluates factors such as temperatures, airflow, operating schedules, process requirements, energy demand, equipment configuration and facility layout to determine where recovery opportunities exist and whether they are technically and economically practical.

In some facilities, the opportunity may involve recovering heat from an air-pollution-control or dust-collection system. In others, the most valuable opportunity may originate elsewhere in the manufacturing process.

This broader approach changes the conversation from simply reducing the energy consumed by an individual piece of equipment to improving how energy moves throughout the facility.
