Leading Edge Fence & Gates is drawing attention to wind load as a design factor in fence and gate installations, timed to the period from late summer through autumn when the Mid-Atlantic experiences its highest frequency of tropical remnants and severe thunderstorm systems. Wind acts on a fence as a lateral load, and the way that load travels to the ground determines whether an installation survives a storm intact. The load is collected by the panel surface, transferred through the rails into the posts, and resolved at the footing below grade. A failure at any point along that path appears as a leaning post, a separated rail, or a section of fence on the ground.

The governing engineering reference is ASCE 7, the American Society of Civil Engineers standard for minimum design loads on buildings and other structures. It establishes basic wind speeds by geographic location and provides the framework used to calculate wind pressure. Delaware sits within a coastal-influenced wind region, and design wind speeds within the state vary according to proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay.
Panel openness is the variable that most directly changes the load a fence carries. A solid privacy panel presents a continuous surface with no path for air to pass through, so it collects the full pressure the wind delivers. A shadow box panel, with boards alternating on either side of the rail, permits partial airflow through the assembly. Split rail and picket fencing, with substantial open area between members, transfers considerably less. The same wind produces markedly different loads on identical posts depending on which of those styles a property owner selected.
“Most people choose a fence style for privacy or for appearance, and the wind consequence of that choice never enters the conversation,” said Wesley Tribbitt, Owner of Leading Edge Fence & Gates. “A solid panel and an open picket fence on the same property line are not carrying anything close to the same load.”
Ornamental fencing has an established performance standard of its own. ASTM F2408, the specification covering ornamental fences employing steel, aluminum and other metals, sets requirements that include structural performance criteria. Aluminum fencing in two rail and three rail configurations presents substantial open area between its members, which is one reason open metal fencing is commonly specified where wind exposure is a known concern.
Vinyl behaves differently again. Rigid PVC fence is covered under ASTM F964, and the material’s response to load is temperature-dependent, becoming less flexible as temperatures drop. That characteristic explains why a winter storm and a summer storm of equivalent wind speed do not present the same situation to the same fence.
What happens below grade matters as much as the panel above it. Frost protection requirements in Delaware vary by county, with New Castle County applying a deeper frost line than Kent and Sussex Counties. A post set to an inadequate depth loses bearing capacity as the surrounding soil moves through repeated freeze and thaw cycles. A post that has gradually loosened across several winters meets a storm in a materially weaker condition than it held on the day it was installed.
Gates concentrate all of these considerations into a single point on the fence line. A gate is a large panel supported from one side only, carrying its own weight as a cantilever before any wind arrives. That is why gate posts are typically set deeper and larger than line posts, and why a gate that has begun to sag is displaying a structural change rather than a cosmetic one.
Automated gates introduce a further consideration. An operator holds the gate in position and moves it through a defined range of travel, and wind acting on a gate leaf transfers force directly into that assembly. A gate left standing open through a storm presents its full surface area to the wind without the support of a closed and latched position.
“After a storm, the useful inspection is at the base of the posts, not at the panels,” Tribbitt said. “Panel damage announces itself immediately. A post that has shifted at grade is the one that determines whether this becomes a repair or a replacement.”
Property owners assessing a fence line following a wind event can look for posts that have moved at ground level, rails that have pulled away from their connection points, panel damage isolated to a single section, and any change in the way a gate swings or latches. Scheduled inspection, whether performed by the owner or handled through a maintenance agreement, identifies loosening connections and shifting posts while they remain a small correction rather than a full replacement.
