Thomas G Leech Brings History Engineering and Human Stories Together in Bridge Stories Every Bridge Has a Story

A remarkable journey through the world’s bridges reveals the people, passion, triumphs, and tragedies behind some of history’s most fascinating structures.

Acclaimed engineer, author, and educator Thomas G. Leech, P.E., S.E., invites readers into the captivating world of bridges with his compelling book, Bridge Stories – Every Bridge Has a Story. More than an exploration of engineering, the book uncovers the deeply human stories that have shaped bridges throughout history.

From ancient arches to modern marvels, Leech presents a collection of essays and narrations that reveal how bridges are far more than steel and stone. They are symbols of innovation, perseverance, artistry, and connection. Each chapter introduces readers to the visionaries, unexpected events, personal triumphs, and historical moments that transformed these structures into enduring landmarks.

“For every bridge there is a story,” says Leech. “Some are stories of genius and creativity, others are stories of tragedy, discovery, resilience, and hope.”

The book features the stories of 125 bridges from around the world, enhanced by 21 maps and illustrations along with 149 historical photographs. Readers will encounter legendary figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Andrea Palladio, John Roebling, and other pioneering engineers and architects whose ideas forever changed the landscape of transportation and design. The collection also highlights bridge poetry, covered bridges, and the cultural significance these structures hold across generations.

Leech’s fascination with bridges began in childhood with a simple yet profound question: “How can an arch bridge, something so slender at its apex, not simply fall down?” That curiosity evolved into a distinguished engineering career and a lifelong appreciation for the beauty, complexity, and hidden stories behind bridges.

A respected authority in the field, Thomas G. Leech currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and previously retired as Chief Engineer of Bridges and Structures for Gannett Fleming, Inc., an international engineering organization. Throughout his career, his projects and achievements have earned numerous local, national, and international recognitions, including the 2012 Engineer of the Year Award from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Distinguished Civil Engineer Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers Pittsburgh Section.

Bridge Stories – Every Bridge Has a Story appeals to history enthusiasts, engineering professionals, students, architects, and anyone fascinated by the stories hidden within the world’s most iconic structures. Through vivid storytelling and historical insight, Leech reminds readers that every bridge carries not only people across distances, but also carries stories across time.
