Mount Vernon, Illinois May 11, 2026 (Issuewire.com) Kelly R. Scott, owner of Little Britches, is using a local donation as a broader call for people nationwide to support the organizations already serving families, veterans, and neighbors in their own communities.

As Little Britches enters its next chapter, Scott announced that portions of the stores remaining items and fixtures will be donated to two local organizations: the Veterans Assistance Commission of Jefferson County, Illinois, and the United Way of South Central Illinois.

The donation includes clothing racks for the Veterans Assistance Commissions clothing closet, which serves veterans and their families. Another portion of the donation is going directly to the United Way of South Central Illinois.

For Scott, the United Way connection is especially personal. Her uncle, Gordon B. Tittle, was deeply involved with the United Way in Henderson, Kentucky, and has an award named in his honor.

Being able to support the United Way in even a small way feels incredibly meaningful. My uncle believed in service, community, and showing up for people. As Little Britches moves into this next phase, it feels right that some of what helped us serve families can now help another organization continue serving families too.

Founded in 1999, Little Britches has served families for more than two decades. Scott said the donation is a way for pieces of the former store to continue serving others in a practical, meaningful way.

The Veterans Assistance Commission of Jefferson County will use the donated clothing racks to improve its clothing closet for veterans and their families.

This donation by Little Britches will allow us to display our clothing donations in a way that is not only more appealing but also more accessible for the Veterans and their families we have the opportunity to serve. I am truly looking forward to getting it set up and how much it will add to our clothing closet. We have been getting quite a few quality donations and this will allow us to display them all so those in need have an easier time getting what they need. I could not be more grateful for the donation, when the opportunity to make money off of the item was easily there for the store to take.

Zach Brooks is superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Jefferson County, Illinois.

While the donation began locally in Mount Vernon, Scott said she hopes the message reaches far beyond southern Illinois. She is encouraging business owners, families, and community members across the country to look for simple, tangible ways to support their local United Way chapters, veterans organizations, clothing closets, and family-serving nonprofits.

Scott said many people think giving has to be large to matter, but local organizations often need practical support, including clothing, household goods, volunteer time, store fixtures, supplies, and financial contributions.

Little Britches has served families since 1999, and this donation feels like a way to let pieces of the old store continue serving families in a new way, Scott said.

The donation also reflects Scotts broader shift into speaking, advocacy, and community-centered work. As Little Britches evolves, Scott is focusing more of her public platform on resilience, accountability, service, and the responsibility people have to show up for one another both online and in real life.

Scott said the goal is not simply to mark a business transition, but to remind people that every community already has organizations doing important work. Those organizations need support before a crisis, during a crisis, and long after public attention moves elsewhere.

Community members interested in helping are encouraged to contact their local United Way, veterans assistance commission, veterans service organization, clothing closet, or family-serving nonprofit to ask what is needed most.
