Kellum Dietz Encourages People to Reconnect Through Creativity and Conversation

York, Pennsylvania artist Kellum Dietz is calling on individuals to use creativity and face-to-face connection to strengthen communities, improve wellbeing, and make a positive difference one interaction at a time.

Caricature artist and live event entertainer Kellum Dietz is encouraging people to rediscover the value of creativity, genuine conversation, and everyday acts of kindness as simple ways to strengthen communities and improve personal wellbeing.

After spending years drawing thousands of guests at Hershey Park and other major amusement parks, Dietz believes some of life’s most meaningful moments happen during ordinary interactions.

“People often remember how you made them feel more than what you created,” says Dietz. “A drawing might last for years, but the conversation and the smile that come with it are what people really remember.”

Dietz has built a career that blends artistic skill with more than 15 years of customer service experience. Alongside his work as a caricature artist, he has worked as a bartender, wedding DJ, videographer, gym manager and character performer, giving him countless opportunities to meet people from every walk of life.

Those experiences have shaped his belief that creativity is about far more than producing artwork.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with people,” says Dietz. “Every person has a story. When you take the time to listen and connect, you both walk away with something valuable.”

Research suggests those moments of connection matter. According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory on loneliness and social connection, lacking social connection can increase the risk of premature death by levels comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes per day. Meanwhile, the National Endowment for the Arts has reported that participation in the arts is associated with improved wellbeing, stronger community engagement, and reduced feelings of isolation.

Dietz believes these findings reinforce something he has witnessed throughout his career.

“We spend so much time looking at screens that we sometimes forget how powerful a real conversation can be,” he says. “Whether it’s drawing someone, talking with them, or simply making them laugh, those moments stay with people.”

His commitment to helping others extends beyond his profession. Dietz has supported food drives, cancer research, the Red Cross, and has volunteered as a Make-A-Wish character actor, using entertainment and creativity to bring joy to children and families facing difficult circumstances.

“If you have the opportunity to brighten someone’s day, take it,” says Dietz. “It doesn’t have to be something big. Small moments can leave lasting memories.”

Mental health experts continue to emphasise the importance of community involvement. The World Health Organization recognises social connection as an important contributor to mental wellbeing, while studies have found that volunteering can improve life satisfaction and strengthen local communities.

Dietz hopes more people will discover creative outlets of their own, regardless of experience or profession.

“You don’t have to be an artist,” he says. “Draw something. Write something. Volunteer. Have a conversation with someone new. Creativity starts with showing up and being willing to connect.”

A Simple Call to Action

Kellum Dietz encourages everyone to take one small step this week to strengthen their community:

  • Spend time talking with someone face to face.

  • Support a local artist or community event.

  • Volunteer for a local charity or food drive.

  • Create something by hand, even if it’s only for yourself.

  • Share encouragement with someone who could use a smile.

Small actions, repeated often, can help create stronger communities and more meaningful relationships.
